You know those people who obnoxiously tweet, Facebook and blog widget their running times and distances?
I hate them.
I exaggerate.
I only hate every fiber of their obnoxious “put down the Doritos and look at me acting all superior and health-conscious” beings.
Know who hates them more than me?
My Love.
But only because she can’t be one of them.
After running two marathons and three half-marathons over the years to raise money to help find a cure for Li’l Diva’s juvenile myositis, My Love has been officially scratched from the Baltimore Running Festival on Oct. 13, 2012. She goes under the knife next week to repair a torn meniscus in one of her knees.
In her place, will be …
<Gulp> Me.
Yes, after years of passing out water to nearly passed-out runners, sweeping up their discarded cups and ringing cowbells for encouragement, I will be running this year. Really.
And so will 10-year-old Excitable.
Yes, we Uncool dudes will be side-by-side, desperately trying to drag each other through the most grueling of all the runs – the 5K.
Stop giggling.
For a dad who runs like he has a refrigerator on his back and his son who finds changing his underwear a challenge, a 5K is no cakewalk. (But it is the equivalent of about 25,000 Twizzlers laid end-to-end.)
We’ve been training for a week now, and I’m happy to report there has only been a few sore leg muscles (both of us), a couple of side cramps (the boy)and one near vomiting (lesson learned: don’t carb-load on donuts prior to your run). All the while I keep telling Excitable, “It’s not speed we’re going for, it’s avoiding death. Or worse, embarrassment.”
So please support the two of us by making a donation, big or small, to the Cure JM Foundation, the all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to putting an end to this potentially devastating, sometime fatal autoimmune disease. Here’s how:
1) Make a secure online donation via credit card online. Our family’s fundraising page is: http://tinyurl.com/JM-donate-online
2) Fill out this form then write a check to "Cure JM Foundation," put in the memo section that you are sponsoring Kevin and Rhonda McKeever, and then mail it to:

Now excuse me. I gotta run.
Kevin, you're going to do great. It's awesome that you're in this run and that you're raising money. Keep up the training. :)
ReplyDeleteYou can do it, buddy. Have Excitable run half & you run the other half. Relays are all the rage these days.
ReplyDeleteI got so wrapped up in 'this is all about you' I completely forgot to say, "Dayum, woman, why'dja go and tear that meniscus?" Hope the surgery goes well & healing is quick.
ReplyDeleteWhen will they invent fundraisers in which participants see how many donuts they can eat?
ReplyDeleteBest of luck to you!
You had me at "Twizzlers."
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you. And I will be wishing your wife a VERY speedy recovery!
ReplyDeleteNon-running me has been helping my non-running Mom through a double knee replacement recovery the last three weeks, so I send my best wishes for your love's recovery, and your run. My non-running knees ache just thinking about it.
